Gumbo Limbo Spiraling Whitefly (Aleurodicus rugioperculatus) in Southeast Florida.
Biology
There is little information on the biology of this new whitefly, however, research is ongoing to describe the life cycle and host range. This whitefly is closely related to giant whitefly, Aleurodicus dugesii, and shares some similarities. Like giant whitefly, the adult is about 3 times larger than other whiteflies that occur in the U.S., and are more docile (slower moving) than other types of whiteflies.
The adult whiteflies congregate on the undersides of the leaves to feed and reproduce.
Host Plants
Thus far, there have been reports that whiteflies have been spotted on gumbo limbo, Calophyllum species, black olive, copperleaf, broadleaf arrowhead, cocoplum, Brazilian pepper, wax myrtle, live oak, avocado and mango. Whiteflies have been reported on multiple palms including areca palm, Veitchia species, and coconut. More host plants are being discovered.
Control
Trunk injection of IMA-jet (Imidacloprid) on trees over 3” DBH and foliar spray and/or soil drenching of AzaSol™(azadirachtin) on plant material under 3” DBH and edible fruit trees including coconut palms.
